So it begins...

I saw in 2010 in the best way possible - with good friends old and new.

And I've made a positive start with my 30 resolutions for 2010.

Resolution No. 2

I think I may have been a little bit conservative in my ambition.

I've calculated my carbon footprint for last year as 14.8 tonnes CO2 equivalent (using this quick calculator) which is roughly equal to the average UK carbon footprint (15 tonnes). Mine was exceptionally high last year because I took two long flights and ate quite a lot of meat and dairy - something which won't be happening again according to resolutions no. 21 and 22.

To achieve my 10:10 goal: ie. 10% reductions by the end of the year I need to reduce my footprint by 1.5 tonnes CO2e. In reality, if I don't fly anywhere, continue to be energy-conscious, use public transport, eat a quasi-veggie diet and don't buy new stuff, I can practically halve my carbon footprint to about 7.25 tonnes. Imagine if everyone who signed up to 10:10 cut their carbon footprints by 50%...

Pickled Garlic

Anyway, in other 'resolution' related news, I've also ticked off resolution no. 25. I LOVE pickled garlic and often buy hideously expensive stuff from farmer's markets. I decided to try and make my own this year and I've just completed my first test batch. It's really simple - just peel a few heads of garlic, boil up some white vinegar with spices of your choice (I used mustard seed, rosemary and bird's eye chilli) and boil the garlic cloves for 5 minutes before pouring into a sterilised jar and sealing. It will need to rest for about 3 - 4 weeks before I can taste test it to see if it worked. So...stay tooned!
